La frase interrogativa del presente continuo

La domanda al presente continuo si forma spostando il verbo be (am / is / are) davanti al soggetto, e alla fine della frase si mette il punto interrogativo.

Spiegazione

A.  Ordine — verbo be + soggetto + verbo-ing

Basta spostare davanti al soggetto il verbo be della frase affermativa e la domanda è pronta. verbo be + soggetto + verbo-ing + ? è l'unico ordine da rispettare.

Frase affermativaDomanda
You are reading.Are you reading?
He is sleeping.Is he sleeping?
They are coming.Are they coming?
It is raining.Is it raining?
  • Are you working today? (Lavori oggi?)
  • Is she watching TV? (Sta guardando la TV?)
  • Are they having dinner? (Stanno cenando?)

B.  Risposte brevi con Yes / No

Alla domanda al presente continuo si risponde brevemente aggiungendo dopo Yes / No «soggetto + verbo be» oppure «soggetto + verbo be + not».

DomandaRisposta affermativaRisposta negativa
Are you studying?Yes, I am.No, I'm not.
Is she cooking?Yes, she is.No, she isn't.
Are they playing?Yes, they are.No, they aren't.
Is it raining?Yes, it is.No, it isn't.
  • Are you feeling okay? — Yes, I am. (Ti senti bene? Sì, sto bene.)
  • Is he waiting for us? — No, he isn't. (Ci sta aspettando? No, non ci sta aspettando.)
  • Are the kids sleeping? — Yes, they are. (I bambini stanno dormendo? Sì, stanno dormendo.)

C.  Interrogativo + verbo be + soggetto + verbo-ing

Se dopo un interrogativo come What / Where / When / Why / How aggiungi il verbo be + soggetto + verbo-ing, ottieni una domanda al continuo che chiede un'informazione precisa. È un modello usatissimo nella conversazione reale.

Punti chiave

  3. 3Nella risposta breve Yes/No vanno sempre rimessi il soggetto e il verbo be: ricordalo. (X: Yes, am. / O: Yes, I am.)
  4. 4What are you doing?
