Alle domande con il verbo be si risponde brevemente aggiungendo dopo Yes / No «soggetto + verbo be» oppure «soggetto + verbo be + not». Nella risposta affermativa non si usa la contrazione, mentre nella risposta negativa è naturale.

C.  Interrogativo + verbo be — What / Where / How / Who

Anche dopo un interrogativo (What, Where, How, Who ecc.) si aggiunge direttamente il verbo be, e si può così chiedere un'informazione precisa. L'ordine è sempre lo stesso: interrogativo + verbo be + soggetto + ?

Punti chiave

  1. 1La domanda con il verbo be è completa non appena si sposta il verbo be davanti al soggetto: quest'ordine è l'unica regola. (esempio: You are → Are you?)
  2. 2Nelle risposte l'affermativa non si contrae (Yes, I am) e solo la negativa si contrae (No, I'm not): è un uso tipico dell'inglese naturale.
  3. 3Nelle risposte brevi con Yes / No bisogna sempre ripetere il soggetto e il verbo be: ricordalo. (X: Yes, am. / O: Yes, I am.)
  4. 4Se dopo un interrogativo (What / Where / How / Who) si aggiunge il verbo be, si ottiene una domanda che chiede un'informazione precisa: impara bene questa estensione della regola.
  5. 5am not non ha contrazione, quindi la risposta negativa si scrive sempre e solo nella forma I'm not: verifica di nuovo questa eccezione.
