A. 依距離與數的區別
指示代名詞依照與說話者的距離(近·遠)和數(單數·複數)分為四種。近的用 this·these，遠的用 that·those 這個原則最重要。

- This is a pen. (這是一支筆。)

B. 代名詞與形容詞兩種用法
指示代名詞可以單獨當名詞使用(代名詞用法)，也可以放在名詞前面修飾該名詞，像形容詞一樣使用(形容詞用法)。後面有名詞就是形容詞用法，沒有就是代名詞用法。

C. 與 be 動詞搭配 — 單複數一致
指示代名詞當句子的主詞時，單數(this / that)要搭配 is，複數(these / those)要搭配 are。數的一致是選擇 be 動詞的基本規則。
