数字と序数
英語の数字は個数を数える基数と順序を表す序数の2つに分かれます。基数は名詞の個数を数えるとき、序数は順位・日付・階数を表すときに使い、序数の前にはたいてい the が付きます。

A. 基数 — 個数を数える数字
基数は個数・年齢・電話番号など、個数と数量を表すときに使う数字で、名詞の前に置かれます。1~12はそれぞれ違う名前を持ち、13~19は -teen、20・30・40 などは -ty の語尾を使います。

B. 序数 — 順序を表す数字
序数は順序・順位・日付・階数を表すときに使い、ほとんどは基数のうしろに -th を付けますが、1st(first)、2nd(second)、3rd(third)は特別な形を持ちます。序数の前にはたいてい the が付く という点を覚えておきましょう。

C. 日付・電話番号・年齢の読み方
日付は序数、年齢・電話番号は基数で読み、大きな数字は桁を区切って自然に読むのが慣用です。電話番号の0はたいてい「oh」または「zero」と読みます。

重要ポイント
- 1基数は個数・年齢・電話番号を表すときに使い、序数は順序・日付・階数を表すときに使うという点が2つの数字の根本的な違いです。
- 2序数の前にはたいてい the を付けるという規則が序数使用の基本原則です。(例:the first day、the third floor)
- 3ほとんどの序数は基数 + -th の形ですが、1st(first)/ 2nd(second)/ 3rd(third)は特別な形を持つので、まるごと覚える必要があります。
- 4five → fifth、nine → ninth、twelve → twelfth のように綴りが少し変わる序数があるので注意してください。
- 5電話番号は数字を1つずつ読み、0は「oh」または「zero」と読むという慣用が実戦会話でよく使われます。
