Spiegazione
A. Come si forma — -est / most
Le parole brevi di 1~2 sillabe prendono -est, quelle lunghe di tre sillabe o più prendono most davanti, e in entrambi i casi ci vuole sempre the prima. La formula è the + superlativo + of/in e le regole ortografiche (-e, -y, consonante doppia) sono le stesse del comparativo.
| Positivo | Superlativo | Regola |
|---|---|---|
| tall | the tallest | -est di base |
| nice | the nicest | finisce in -e → solo -st |
| happy | the happiest | consonante + y → i + est |
| big | the biggest | vocale breve + consonante → consonante doppia |
| useful | the most useful | tre sillabe o più → most |
| beautiful | the most beautiful | tre sillabe o più → most |
- Kevin is the tallest boy in his class.
- This is the funniest movie I've ever seen.
- July is usually the hottest month here.
- That was the most interesting lecture of the semester.
B. Irregolari — good / bad / much / little
| Positivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| good / well | better | the best |
| bad / badly | worse | the worst |
| much / many | more | the most |
| little | less | the least |
| far | farther / further | the farthest / furthest |
- This is the best coffee in town. (Questo è il caffè migliore della città.)
- That was the worst day of the year. (È stato il giorno peggiore dell'anno.)
- She spends the most money on books.
- This route takes the least time. (Questo percorso richiede meno tempo di tutti.)
C. the + superlativo + of / in — l'ambito
| Forma | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| of + plurale | She is the youngest of the three. | la più giovane dei tre |
| in + luogo | He is the tallest in the class. | il più alto della classe |
| rafforzato con ever | This is the best book I've ever read. | il migliore mai letto |
| one of the + superlativo + plurale | It's one of the largest cities in Asia. | una delle più grandi città asiatiche |
- Anna is the smartest of all my classmates.
- This is the tallest building in our city.
- That was the worst mistake I've ever made.
- Seoul is one of the busiest cities in the world.
Punti chiave
- 1Il superlativo vuole sempre the davanti e si forma con -est sulle parole brevi, con most su quelle lunghe. (es.: the tallest, the most useful)
(es.: of the three, in the class)
- 3good→best, bad→worst, much/many→most, little→least sono superlativi irregolari da imparare a memoria così come sono.
- 4L'errore più frequente è dimenticare the oppure marcare due volte il superlativo mettendo insieme most e -est. (es.: the tallest — most tallest è sbagliato)
- 5Per sottolineare l'esperienza si usa idiomaticamente the + superlativo + sostantivo + I've ever + participio passato. (es.: the best movie I've ever seen)
- 6one of the + superlativo + sostantivo plurale significa «uno dei più ~», e il sostantivo che segue va obbligatoriamente al plurale. (es.: one of the busiest cities)
