A. Como formar o superlativo — -est / most
A fórmula é the + superlativo + of/in, e as regras de ortografia (-e/-y/dobrar a consoante) são as mesmas do comparativo.
| Grau positivo | Superlativo | Regra |
|---|---|---|
| tall | the tallest | -est básico |
| happy | the happiest | consoante+y → i + est |
| big | the biggest | vogal breve+consoante → dobra a consoante |
| useful | the most useful | 3 sílabas ou mais → most |
| beautiful | the most beautiful | 3 sílabas ou mais → most |
- Kevin is the tallest boy in his class.
- This is the funniest movie I've ever seen.
- July is usually the hottest month here.
- That was the most interesting lecture of the semester.
B. Superlativos irregulares — good·bad·much·little
| Grau positivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| good / well | better | the best |
| bad / badly | worse | the worst |
| much / many | more | the most |
| little | less | the least |
| far | farther / further | the farthest / furthest |
- This is the best coffee in town. (Este é o melhor café da cidade.)
- That was the worst day of the year. (Aquele foi o pior dia do ano.)
- She spends the most money on books.
- This route takes the least time.
C. the + superlativo + of / in — delimitar o âmbito
| Forma | Exemplo | Sentido |
|---|---|---|
| of + plural | She is the youngest of the three. | a mais nova das três |
| in + lugar | He is the tallest in the class. | o mais alto da turma |
| realce com ever | This is the best book I've ever read. | o melhor que já li |
| one of the + superlativo + plural | It's one of the largest cities in Asia. | uma das maiores cidades da Ásia |
- Anna is the smartest of all my classmates.
- This is the tallest building in our city.
- That was the worst mistake I've ever made.
- Seoul is one of the busiest cities in the world.
Pontos principais
- 1O superlativo leva obrigatoriamente the na frente, e forma-se com -est nas palavras curtas e most nas longas. (Ex.: the tallest, the most useful)
- 2Para delimitar o âmbito, of + substantivo no plural entre vários termos e in + substantivo no singular dentro de um lugar ou grupo formam o par. (Ex.: of the three, in the class)
- 3good→best, bad→worst, much/many→most, little→least são superlativos irregulares que se decoram inteiros.
- 4Os deslizes mais comuns de quem aprende são esquecer o the e marcar duas vezes, juntando -est e most. (Ex.: the tallest — most tallest está errado)
- 5Para realçar a experiência, a forma consagrada e muito frequente é the + superlativo + substantivo + I've ever + particípio passado. (Ex.: the best movie I've ever seen)
- 6one of the + superlativo + substantivo no plural significa 'um dos mais ~', e o substantivo que vem depois vai obrigatoriamente no plural. (Ex.: one of the busiest cities)
