There was / There were の否定文と疑問文
There was / There were の 否定文は be動詞のうしろに not を付けて作り、疑問文は be動詞を there の前に移動して作ります。否定文・疑問文の両方が現在形(There is / are)とまったく同じ規則に従い、時制だけが過去に変わります。

A. 否定文 — There wasn't / There weren't
否定文は was / were のすぐうしろに not を付け、会話では短縮形の wasn't / weren't の方がずっとよく使われます。否定文ではうしろの名詞を any と一緒に使うのが自然です。

B. 疑問文 — Was there / Were there
疑問文は was または were を there の前に移動するのが唯一の規則で、答えにも必ず there を再び入れます。Was there + 単数 / Were there + 複数 + ? という語順をセットで身につけましょう。

- Were there any changes in the plan? — No, there weren't. (その計画に何か変更がありましたか? いいえ、ありませんでした。)
C. How many / How much — 過去の数量をたずねる
過去の数・量をたずねるときは How many + 複数 + were there ~? / How much + 不可算名詞 + was there ~? の形を使います。このパターンは過去の状況を回想するときにとてもよく使われます。

重要ポイント
- 1There was / were の否定文は be動詞のうしろに not を付け、疑問文は be動詞を there の前に移動するという規則は現在形とまったく同じです。
- 2会話では wasn't / weren't の短縮形の方がずっと自然で、答えの短縮(No, there wasn't)もよく使われるという点を覚えておきましょう。
