Congiunzioni (because / if / that)
because indica la causa, if la condizione e that introduce il contenuto «il fatto che»: sono congiunzioni subordinanti seguite ciascuna da una proposizione completa (soggetto + verbo).
Spiegazione
because indica la causa, if la condizione e that introduce il contenuto «il fatto che»: sono congiunzioni subordinanti seguite ciascuna da una proposizione completa (soggetto + verbo). In particolare vanno sempre distinti because (seguito da una proposizione) e because of (seguito da un sintagma nominale).
A. because vs because of — proposizione o sintagma
because è una congiunzione seguita da una proposizione completa, cioè da «soggetto + verbo», mentre because of è un'espressione prepositiva seguita da un sostantivo o da un sintagma nominale. Impara in blocco la formula because + proposizione / because of + sintagma.
| Forma | Che cosa segue | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| because | proposizione (soggetto + verbo) | because it was raining |
| because of | sostantivo o sintagma nominale | because of the rain |
- She was late because she missed the bus. (Lei era in ritardo perché aveva perso l'autobus.)
- She was late because of the traffic. (Lei era in ritardo a causa del traffico.)
- I couldn't sleep because the room was too hot.
- The flight was delayed because of bad weather.
B. if — l'avverbiale di condizione
| Condizionale (proposizione con if) | Principale |
|---|---|
| If it rains, | we'll stay home. |
| If you need help, | just call me. |
| If she comes, | tell her to wait. |
- If you study hard, you will pass the exam. (Se studi molto, supererai l'esame.)
- If you are tired, take a rest. (Se sei stanco, riposati un po'.)
- If it is sunny tomorrow, we'll go hiking.
- I'll call you if I have time. (Ti chiamo se ho tempo.)
C. that — congiunzione della proposizione sostantiva
that significa «il fatto che» e serve a mettere una frase intera al posto di un sostantivo; compare spesso come complemento oggetto di verbi come think·know·believe·say·hope. Nel parlato that si omette spesso.
| Verbo | + proposizione con that | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| think | pensare che | I think that he is kind. |
| know | sapere che | I know that she is busy. |
| believe | credere che | I believe that you can do it. |
| hope | sperare che | I hope that you feel better. |
| say | dire che | He says that he is tired. |
- I believe that everything will be okay. (Credo che andrà tutto bene.)
- She said that she was busy. (Lei ha detto che era occupata.)
- I hope that you have a great trip. (Spero che tu faccia un ottimo viaggio.)
- We think (that) the movie is good. (Pensiamo che il film sia bello.)
Punti chiave
- 1Dopo because viene una proposizione completa, dopo because of un sintagma nominale. (esempio: because it rained / because of the rain)
- 2Dentro l'avverbiale di condizione con if anche il futuro si esprime con il presente, senza will, e will compare solo nella principale. (esempio: If it rains, we 'll stay.)
- 3La proposizione con that sta come complemento oggetto dopo verbi come think·know·believe·hope·say, e nel parlato si omette spesso. (esempio: I think (that) she's right.)
(esempio: I stayed home because I was sick. — Because I was sick, so I stayed.
(esempio: If he comes, ... = non si sa se verrà / When he comes, ... = verrà di sicuro)
