接続詞 (because / if / that)
because は理由、if は条件、that は「〜ということ」という内容を導く従属接続詞で、うしろにはそれぞれ完全な節(主語 + 動詞)が来ます。特に because(うしろに節)と because of(うしろに名詞句)は必ず区別しなければなりません。

A. because vs because of — 理由の節と理由の名詞句
because はうしろに「主語 + 動詞」がある完全な節が来る接続詞で、because of はうしろに名詞・名詞句が来る前置詞表現です。because + 節 / because of + 名詞句 の公式をまとめて覚えておきましょう。

- She was late because she missed the bus. (彼女はバスに乗り遅れて遅刻しました。)

- I couldn't sleep because the room was too hot. (部屋が暑すぎて私は眠れませんでした。)
- The flight was delayed because of bad weather. (その便は悪天候のために遅延しました。)
B. if — 条件の副詞節
if は「もし〜なら」という条件を導く従属接続詞で、うしろに完全な節が来ます。条件の副詞節の中でも未来のことを現在形で表し、主節には will や命令文がよく来ます。

- I'll call you if I have time. (時間があれば電話しますね。)
C. that — 名詞節の接続詞
that は「〜ということ」という意味で、完全な文を名詞の位置に入れるときに使う接続詞で、think・know・believe・say・hope のような動詞の目的語の位置によく来ます。会話では that をよく省略します。

- We think (that) the movie is good. (私たちはその映画がよいと思います。)
重要ポイント
- 1because のうしろには完全な節、because of のうしろには名詞句が来ます。(例: because it rained / because of the rain)
- 2if の条件の副詞節の中では、未来のことも will なしで現在形を使い、主節にだけ will が来ます。(例: If it rains, we 'll stay.)
- 3that 節は think・know・believe・hope・say のような動詞のうしろで目的語の位置に来て、会話ではよく省略されます。(例: I think (that) she's right.)
- 4because と so は意味が反対(理由・結果)なので、1つの文で一緒には使いません。(例: I stayed home because I was sick. — Because I was sick, so I stayed. は誤り)
- 5if は条件、when は確実に起きることに使います。(例: If he comes, ... = 来るかどうか不明 / When he comes, ... = 来ることは確実)
例文
I was tired because I worked late.
私は遅くまで働いたので疲れていました。
We stayed inside because it was cold.
私たちは寒かったので中にいました。
The road was closed because of the accident.
その道路は事故のために閉鎖されました。
She couldn't come because of her cold.
