Spiegazione

Il periodo ipotetico misto ha la forma 'If + soggetto + had + participio passato (condizione passata), soggetto + would/could/might + forma base (risultato presente)' e si usa quando una situazione contraria a ciò che è accaduto continua a produrre effetti fino ad adesso.

A.  If + had + p.p. (passato) , would + V (presente)

Nel periodo ipotetico misto solo la proposizione con if prende la forma del passato perfetto, mentre la principale prende quella della possibilità (would/could/might + forma base). Impara in blocco la formula mista If + had + participio passato, would + forma base.

StrutturaMomenti combinatiEsempio
If + had p.p., would + forma basecondizione passata → risultato presenteIf I had studied, I would be rich now.
If + had p.p., could + forma basecondizione passata → capacità presenteIf I had learned French, I could speak it now.
If + had p.p., might + forma basecondizione passata → possibilità presenteIf she had accepted, she might be here now.
  • If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn't be tired now.
  • If he had listened to advice, he would have a better job now. (Se avesse ascoltato i consigli, adesso avrebbe un lavoro migliore.)
  • If they had left earlier, they would be home by now. (Se fossero partiti prima, a quest'ora sarebbero a casa.)
  • If I had bought that stock, I could retire now.

SfumaturaEsempioAsse temporale
Rammarico per la scelta passataIf I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.passato (non l'ha fatto) → presente (non lo è)
Dispiacere per l'errore passatoIf he hadn't lied, we would still be friends.passato (ha mentito) → presente (non amici)
Immaginare ciò che non si è fattoIf she had moved to Seoul, she would live near me.passato (non è andata) → presente (vive lontano)
Condizione passata → capacità presenteIf I had practiced piano, I could play it now.passato (non l'ha fatto) → presente (non ci riesce)
  • If I had learned to drive, I wouldn't need taxis now.
  • If she had accepted his proposal, they would be married by now.
  • If we hadn't sold the house, we would live in the countryside.
  • If I had studied harder in college, I would have a better career.

C.  Esempi tipici — confronto sull'asse temporale

I didn't study. → I am not a doctor.If I had studied, I would be a doctor.
She took the job in Paris. → She lives there. If she hadn't taken the job, she wouldn't live there.
We spent all our money. → We are broke. If we hadn't spent all our money, we wouldn't be broke.
He didn't practice. → He can't play well.If he had practiced, he could play well.
  • If I hadn't eaten too much, I wouldn't feel sick now.
  • If she hadn't missed the flight, she would be in New York today.
  • If we had booked the hotel, we would have a room now.
  • If he hadn't quit his job, he would be rich now.

(esempio: If I had studied, I would be a doctor now.)
  2. 2Impara a riconoscere che il tempo della principale è l'«adesso» e che come segnale ricorrono spesso avverbi come now, today e still. (esempio: I would be rich now.)
  3. 3Ricorda che la proposizione con if è identica a quella dell'irrealtà, ma le due si distinguono perché nella principale non c'è have (would + forma base). (misto: would be / irrealtà: would have been)
(esempio: If I hadn't quit, I would have money now.)
  5. 5Anche il periodo ipotetico misto è un periodo ipotetico, quindi nella proposizione con if non si usano mai would o will, ma soltanto had + participio passato: rispetta questo principio. (esempio: If I had studied, ...)
