Spiegazione

Il periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà ha la forma 'If + soggetto + had + participio passato, soggetto + would/could/might + have + participio passato' ed è l'espressione con cui si immagina una situazione contraria a un fatto passato ormai concluso.

A.  If + had + p.p., would/could/might + have + p.p.

Il periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà accoppia had + participio passato (passato perfetto) nella proposizione con if e would/could/might + have + participio passato nella principale. Impara in blocco la formula If + had + p.p., would have + p.p..

StrutturaSfumaturaEsempio
If + had p.p., would have p.p.sarebbe andata cosìIf I had known, I would have called.
If + had p.p., could have p.p.avrebbe potuto farloIf she had tried, she could have won.
If + had p.p., might have p.p.forse sarebbe andata cosìIf we had left earlier, we might have caught it.
  • If I had woken up earlier, I wouldn't have been late.
  • If they had invited us, we would have come. (Se ci avessero invitati, saremmo venuti.)
  • If she had studied medicine, she could have become a doctor. (Se avesse studiato medicina, sarebbe potuta diventare medico.)
  • If I had taken the bus, I might have arrived on time.

SfumaturaEsempioSottinteso
RammaricoIf I had studied more, I would have passed.non ha studiato, è stato bocciato
DispiacereIf we had left earlier, we would have caught the flight.partiti tardi, volo perso
SollievoIf I hadn't worn a helmet, I would have been hurt.l'ha messo, non si è fatto male
RimproveroIf you had told me, I would have helped.non l'ha detto, non è stato aiutato
  • If I hadn't slept in, I would have caught the bus.
  • If he had apologized, she would have forgiven him.
  • If I had brought an umbrella, I wouldn't have gotten wet.
  • If she had told me the truth, I wouldn't have been upset.

C.  I tempi a confronto — realtà contro immaginazione

I didn't study. → I failed.If I had studied, I would have passed.
She left late. → She missed the train. If she had left early, she wouldn't have missed it.
We didn't know. → We didn't help.If we had known, we would have helped.
He didn't apologize. → She stayed angry. If he had apologized, she would have forgiven him.
  • If I had taken the job, I would have moved to New York. (Se avessi accettato quel lavoro, mi sarei trasferito a New York.)
  • If she hadn't forgotten her passport, she would have boarded the plane.
  • If we had checked the weather, we wouldn't have gone hiking.
  • If he had saved, he could have bought a car.

(esempio: If I had studied, ... → in realtà non ha studiato)
  2. 2Il nucleo della forma è la doppia struttura che accoppia had + participio passato nella proposizione con if e would/could/might + have + participio passato nella principale. (esempio: If I had known, I would have called.)
  3. 3Nella proposizione con if del periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà non si usano mai would have né will have, ma soltanto had p.p.: è il punto in cui si sbaglia più spesso. (esempio: If I had known, ...)
  4. 4Nella principale would, could e might cambiano solo la sfumatura e dopo viene sempre have + participio passato: rispetta questa forma. (esempio: I would have gone / could have gone)
  5. 5Nel parlato è del tutto normale contrarre would have e could have in would've e could've, pronunciandole in modo naturale. (esempio: I would've gone. / He could've helped.)
