Il periodo ipotetico della possibilità

Il periodo ipotetico della possibilità ha la forma 'If + soggetto + verbo al passato, soggetto + would/could/might + forma base' ed è l'espressione con cui si immagina una situazione contraria alla realtà attuale.

Spiegazione

Il periodo ipotetico della possibilità ha la forma 'If + soggetto + verbo al passato, soggetto + would/could/might + forma base' ed è l'espressione con cui si immagina una situazione contraria alla realtà attuale.

A.  Forma — If + passato, would/could/might + forma base

Il periodo ipotetico della possibilità è una struttura doppia: il passato nella proposizione con if e would/could/might + forma base nella principale. Impara in blocco la formula If + passato, would/could + forma base.

If + passato, would + forma basemi piacerebbe / lo fareiIf I had time, I would travel.
If + passato, could + forma basepotrei farloIf I knew French, I could help.
If + passato, might + forma baseforse lo fareiIf she asked, he might agree.
  • If I lived in Paris, I would visit the Louvre often.
  • If we had a bigger house, we could invite more friends.
  • If you asked her nicely, she might say yes.
  • If I spoke Japanese, I would work in Tokyo. (Se parlassi giapponese, lavorerei a Tokyo.)

B.  Il verbo be diventa sempre were

In questo periodo ipotetico il principio è usare were per il verbo be qualunque sia la persona, e 'If I were you' ricorre spessissimo, quasi come espressione idiomatica. Nel parlato si usa anche was, ma nel registro formale e negli esami è obbligatorio were.

IwerewasIf I were you, ...

  • If the weather were nicer, we would go for a walk.
  • If I were in your position, I would take the job.

SfumaturaEsempioSottinteso
DesiderioIf I had a car, I would drive there.adesso non ha l'auto
RammaricoIf I knew the answer, I would tell you.adesso non lo sa
ConsiglioIf I were you, I wouldn't quit.io non sono te

Punti chiave

(esempio: If I had time, I would go.)
  2. 2In questo periodo ipotetico il principio è usare were per il verbo be, qualunque sia la persona. (esempio: If I were you, ...)
  3. 3Nella principale scegli fra would, could e might secondo la sfumatura, e dopo viene sempre la forma base: è questo il nucleo della struttura. (esempio: I would buy / could buy / might buy)
  4. 4'If I were you, ...' (esempio: If I were you, I would apologize.)
  5. 5Nella proposizione con if di questo periodo ipotetico non si usano mai would o will, ma solo il passato: rispetta questa regola. (esempio: If I had time, ...)
