Comparação - forma e sentido do superlativo
A. Superlativo — adjetivo curto e adjetivo longo
A fórmula é the + superlativo + of/in.
| Tipo de adjetivo | Grau positivo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 sílaba | tall | the tallest |
| 1 sílaba (vogal breve+consoante) | big | the biggest |
| consoante + y | happy | the happiest |
| 2 sílabas | clever | the cleverest / the most clever |
| 3 sílabas ou mais | expensive | the most expensive |
| 3 sílabas ou mais | beautiful | the most beautiful |
- She is the youngest in her class. (Ela é a mais nova da turma.)
- This is the busiest street in town.
- That was the most interesting movie I've ever seen.
B. Superlativos irregulares — good·bad·many·little·far
Alguns adjetivos e advérbios comuns mudam para uma forma irregular no superlativo, então decoram-se inteiros junto com o grau positivo. good/well vira best, bad vira worst, many/much vira most, little vira least e far vira farthest / furthest.
| Grau positivo | Superlativo | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| good / well | the best | She is the best singer. |
| bad | the worst | It was the worst day. |
| many / much | the most | He has the most friends. |
| little | the least | This costs the least. |
| far | the farthest / the furthest | It's the farthest from here. |
- This is the best restaurant in the neighborhood. (Este é o melhor restaurante do bairro.)
- Yesterday was the worst day of my week.
- Anna has the most experience of us all.
- This route is the farthest, but the safest.
C. Âmbito — of + plural / in + lugar·grupo
Com âmbito de tempo (the year, my life) também se usa of.
| Âmbito | Forma | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| substantivo plural·tempo | of + plural / tempo | the tallest of the three |
| lugar·organização·grupo | in + lugar no singular | the tallest in the class |
- She is the smartest of all the students.
- This is the oldest building in the city.
- It was the happiest day of my life.
- He is the youngest player in the team. (Ele é o jogador mais novo do time.)
Pontos principais
(Ex.: She is the tallest in the class.)
(Ex.: happy → the happiest, big → the biggest)
- 3Os superlativos de good/well·bad·many/much·little·far mudam de forma irregularmente para the best·the worst·the most·the least·the farthest. (Ex.: She is the best player.)
- 4Se o âmbito da comparação for um substantivo no plural ou um tempo, usa-se of; se for lugar ou grupo, usa-se in. (Ex.: the tallest of the three, the tallest in the class)
(X: She is the tall in the class → O: She is the tallest in the class.)
