La formula è the + superlativo + of/in.
| Tipo di aggettivo | Grado positivo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| una sillaba | tall | the tallest |
| una sillaba (vocale breve + consonante) | big | the biggest |
| consonante + y | happy | the happiest |
| due sillabe | clever | the cleverest / the most clever |
| tre o più sillabe | expensive | the most expensive |
| tre o più sillabe | beautiful | the most beautiful |
- She is the youngest in her class.
- This is the busiest street in town.
- That was the most interesting movie I've ever seen.
B. Superlativi irregolari — good·bad·many·little·far
Alcuni aggettivi e avverbi molto comuni hanno un superlativo irregolare e si imparano in blocco insieme al grado positivo. good/well fa best, bad fa worst, many/much fa most, little fa least e far fa farthest / furthest.
| Grado positivo | Superlativo | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| good / well | the best | She is the best singer. |
| bad | the worst | It was the worst day. |
| many / much | the most | He has the most friends. |
| little | the least | This costs the least. |
| far | the farthest / the furthest | It's the farthest from here. |
- This is the best restaurant in the neighborhood. (Questo è il ristorante migliore del quartiere.)
- Yesterday was the worst day of my week.
- Anna has the most experience of us all. (Anna ha più esperienza di tutti noi.)
- This route is the farthest, but the safest.
C. L'ambito — of + plurale / in + luogo o gruppo
Anche per gli archi di tempo (the year, my life) si usa of.
| Ambito | Forma | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| sostantivo plurale · tempo | of + plurale / tempo | the tallest of the three |
| luogo · organizzazione · gruppo | in + luogo singolare | the tallest in the class |
- She is the smartest of all the students.
- This is the oldest building in the city.
- It was the happiest day of my life.

(esempio: She is the tallest in the class.)
- 2Gli aggettivi brevi prendono -est e quelli lunghi da tre sillabe in su most; consonante + y dà -iest, vocale breve + consonante raddoppia la consonante prima di -est. (esempio: happy → the happiest, big → the biggest)
- 3I superlativi di good/well·bad·many/much·little·far sono irregolari e fanno rispettivamente the best·the worst·the most·the least·the farthest. (esempio: She is the best player.)
(esempio: the tallest of the three, the tallest in the class)
- 5In italiano l'aggettivo non cambia mai forma e basta premettergli articolo + più — il più alto —, mentre in inglese va modificato l'aggettivo stesso con -est o most e resta comunque necessario the. (X: She is the tall in the class → O: She is the tallest in the class.)
