La fórmula es the + superlativo + of/in.
| Tipo de adjetivo | Forma base | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 sílaba | tall | the tallest |
| 1 sílaba (vocal breve + consonante) | big | the biggest |
| consonante + y | happy | the happiest |
| 2 sílabas | clever | the cleverest / the most clever |
| 3 sílabas o más | expensive | the most expensive |
| 3 sílabas o más | beautiful | the most beautiful |
- She is the youngest in her class.
- This is the busiest street in town.
- That was the most interesting movie I've ever seen.
B. Superlativos irregulares — good·bad·many·little·far
Algunos adjetivos y adverbios frecuentes tienen un superlativo de forma irregular, así que conviene aprenderlo de memoria junto con la forma base. good/well pasa a best, bad a worst, many/much a most, little a least y far a farthest o furthest.
| Forma base | Superlativo | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| good / well | the best | She is the best singer. |
| bad | the worst | It was the worst day. |
| many / much | the most | He has the most friends. |
| little | the least | This costs the least. |
| far | the farthest / the furthest | It's the farthest from here. |
- This is the best restaurant in the neighborhood. (Este es el mejor restaurante del barrio.)
- Yesterday was the worst day of my week.
- Anna has the most experience of us all.
- This route is the farthest, but the safest.
C. Ámbito de comparación — of + plural / in + lugar o grupo
Con los ámbitos temporales (the year, my life) también se usa of.
| Ámbito | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| sustantivo plural o tiempo | of + plural / tiempo | the tallest of the three |
| lugar, organización o grupo | in + lugar en singular | the tallest in the class |
- She is the smartest of all the students.
- This is the oldest building in the city.
- It was the happiest day of my life.
- He is the youngest player in the team.
(Ej.: She is the tallest in the class.)
(Ej.: happy → the happiest, big → the biggest)
- 3Los superlativos de good/well, bad, many/much, little y far son irregulares: the best, the worst, the most, the least y the farthest, respectivamente. (Ej.: She is the best player.)
(Ej.: the tallest of the three, the tallest in the class)
(X: She is the tall in the class → O: She is the tallest in the class.)
