관계대명사 that은 who·which와 대체로 바꿔 쓸 수 있지만, 사람+사물이 섞인 선행사, 최상급·서수·the only·all·every, 의문사 who·which 뒤에서는 that을 우선 씁니다.
관계대명사 that은 who·which와 대체로 바꿔 쓸 수 있지만, 사람+사물이 섞인 선행사, 최상급·서수·the only·all·every, 의문사 who·which 뒤에서는 that을 우선 씁니다.
A. 특수 선행사 — 사람+사물, 최상급, 서수, the only 등
선행사가 사람과 사물이 함께 있거나 최상급·서수·the only·the same·the very로 강하게 한정되면 who/which보다 that이 자연스럽습니다. 최상급 · the only · all + that 이 대표 패턴입니다.
|---|---|
| 사람 + 사물 | the boy and the dog that are running |
| 최상급 | the best book that I have read |
| 서수 | the first student that answered |
| the only / the very | the only person that knows / the very thing that I need |
| the same | the same problem that we had last year |
- This is the tallest building that I have ever seen.
- She is the only student that passed the exam.
- It was the very moment that changed my life.
- We had the same lunch that they served yesterday.
B. all·every·any·no로 수식된 명사와 -thing 대명사
all, every, any, no, much, little, most처럼 전칭·부정을 나타내는 형용사로 수식된 명사가 선행사일 때, 그리고 everything·something·nothing·anything 같은 -thing 대명사가 선행사일 때에도 that이 자연스럽습니다.
|---|---|
| all + 명사 | all the money that we saved |
| every + 명사 | every student that attended |
| no + 명사 | no one that I know |
| -thing 대명사 | everything that happened |
- All the food that was left is in the fridge.
- Every person that I spoke to agreed.
- There is nothing that I can do.
- Anything that you say will help.
C. 의문사로 시작하는 문장 뒤 — who·which 회피
|---|---|
| Who is the man who is calling me? | Who is the man that is calling me? |
| Which is the book which you like? | Which is the book that you like? |
- Who is the woman that just walked in?
- Which is the option that you prefer?
- Who was the friend that called you last night?
- Which is the answer that is correct?
- 1최상급·서수·the only·the same·the very로 강하게 한정된 명사가 선행사이면 who/which보다 that이 자연스럽다는 관용을 익혀 두세요. (예: the best movie that I have seen)
- 2all·every·any·no·much·little·most로 수식된 명사와 -thing 대명사(everything·nothing 등)도 that과 짝을 이룬다는 감각을 잡아 두세요. (예: nothing that I can do)
(예: the boy and the dog that are running)
(예: Who is the man that is calling?)
