Explication
Le pronom relatif that s'échange le plus souvent avec who·which, mais après un antécédent mêlant personnes et choses, après un superlatif, un ordinal, the only, all, every, ou après les interrogatifs who·which, on préfère that.
A. Antéc. spéciaux — pers.+choses, superl., ordinal, the only
Lorsque l'antécédent réunit une personne et une chose, ou qu'il est fortement déterminé par un superlatif, un ordinal, the only, the same ou the very, that est plus naturel que who/which. superlatif · the only · all + that en est le schéma type.
| Type d'antécédent | Exemple |
|---|---|
| Personne + chose | the boy and the dog that are running |
| Superlatif | the best book that I have read |
| Ordinal | the first student that answered |
| the only / the very | the only person that knows / the very thing that I need |
| the same | the same problem that we had last year |
- This is the tallest building that I have ever seen.
- She is the only student that passed the exam.
- It was the very moment that changed my life.
- We had the same lunch that they served yesterday.
B. Noms modifiés par all·every·any·no et pronoms en -thing
Quand l'antécédent est un nom modifié par un déterminant de totalité ou de négation comme all, every, any, no, much, little, most, et quand c'est un pronom en -thing comme everything·something·nothing·anything, that est là aussi le choix naturel.
| Antécédent | Exemple |
|---|---|
| all + nom | all the money that we saved |
| every + nom | every student that attended |
| no + nom | no one that I know |
| Pronom en -thing | everything that happened |
- All the food that was left is in the fridge.
- Every person that I spoke to agreed.
- There is nothing that I can do. (Il n'y a rien que je puisse faire.)
- Anything that you say will help. (Tout ce que vous direz sera utile.)
C. Après une question en who·which — éviter who/which
Quand la phrase commence par l'interrogatif who ou which, reprendre who·which comme pronom relatif sonne mal : on évite la répétition avec that.
| Phrase maladroite | Phrase naturelle |
|---|---|
| Who is the man who is calling me? | Who is the man that is calling me? |
| Which is the book which you like? | Which is the book that you like? |
- Who is the woman that just walked in?
- Which is the option that you prefer? (Quelle est l'option que vous préférez ?)
- Who was the friend that called you last night?
- Which is the answer that is correct? (Quelle est la bonne réponse ?)
Points clés
- 1Retenez cet usage : quand l'antécédent est un nom fortement déterminé par un superlatif, un ordinal, the only, the same ou the very, that est plus naturel que who/which. (ex. : the best movie that I have seen)
- 2Développez ce réflexe : les noms modifiés par all·every·any·no·much·little·most et les pronoms en -thing (everything·nothing, etc.) vont eux aussi de pair avec that. (ex. : nothing that I can do)
- 3Rappelez-vous cette règle : quand l'antécédent réunit une personne et une chose, ni who ni which ne conviennent, et on emploie that, qui couvre les deux. (ex. : the boy and the dog that are running)
- 4Retenez cet usage : quand la phrase commence par l'interrogatif who ou which, on ne reprend pas who/which dans la proposition relative et on évite la répétition grâce à that. (ex. : Who is the man that is calling?)
