関係詞 — 主にthatを使う場合
関係代名詞 that は who・which とだいたい入れ替えて使えますが、人+ものが混ざった先行詞、最上級・序数・the only・all・every、疑問詞 who・which で始まる文の後では that を優先して使います。

A. 特殊な先行詞 — 人+もの、最上級、序数、the only など
先行詞に人ともの両方があったり、最上級・序数・the only・the same・the very で強く限定されると、who/which よりも that が自然です。最上級 · the only · all + that が代表的なパターンです。

B. all・every・any・no で修飾された名詞と -thing 代名詞
all, every, any, no, much, little, most のような全称・否定を表す形容詞で修飾された名詞が先行詞のとき、そして everything・something・nothing・anything のような -thing 代名詞が先行詞のときも that が自然です。

C. 疑問詞で始まる文の後 — who・which の回避
文が who・which の疑問詞で始まるとき、関係代名詞にも who・which をまた使うと不自然なので、that で繰り返しを避けます。

重要ポイント
- 1最上級・序数・the only・the same・the very で強く限定された名詞が先行詞なら、who/which よりも that が自然であるという慣用を覚えておきましょう。(例: the best movie that I have seen)
- 2all・every・any・no・much・little・most で修飾された名詞と -thing 代名詞(everything・nothing など)も that とペアになるという感覚をつかんでおきましょう。(例: nothing that I can do)
- 3先行詞に人ともの両方があると、who も which も不自然なので、両方をカバーする that を使うというルールを覚えておきましょう。(例: the boy and the dog that are running)
- 4文が who・which の疑問詞で始まるときは、関係節に who/which をまた使わず、that で繰り返しを避けるという慣用を覚えておきましょう。(例: Who is the man that is calling?)
- 5that は人・ものどちらも受けられますが、カンマの後の継続用法には使えないという例外を知っておきましょう。
