Explicación
El pronombre relativo that puede alternar en general con who y which, pero se prefiere that cuando el antecedente mezcla personas y cosas, cuando lleva superlativo, ordinal, the only, all o every, y detrás de los interrogativos who y which.
A. Antecedente especial — persona+cosa, superl., ord., etc.
Cuando el antecedente reúne a una persona y una cosa, o queda fuertemente delimitado por un superlativo, un ordinal, the only, the same o the very, that resulta más natural que who o which. Superlativo · the only · all + that es el patrón representativo.
| Tipo de antecedente | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| persona + cosa | the boy and the dog that are running |
| superlativo | the best book that I have read |
| ordinal | the first student that answered |
| the only / the very | the only person that knows / the very thing that I need |
| the same | the same problem that we had last year |
- This is the tallest building that I have ever seen.
- She is the only student that passed the exam.
- It was the very moment that changed my life.
- We had the same lunch that they served yesterday. (Comimos el mismo almuerzo que sirvieron ayer.)
B. Nombres con all·every·any·no y pronombres en -thing
Cuando el antecedente es un nombre modificado por adjetivos de totalidad o negación como all, every, any, no, much, little o most, y también cuando es un pronombre en -thing como everything, something, nothing o anything, that resulta igualmente natural.
| Antecedente | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| all + nombre | all the money that we saved |
| every + nombre | every student that attended |
| no + nombre | no one that I know |
| pronombre en -thing | everything that happened |
- All the food that was left is in the fridge.
- Every person that I spoke to agreed.
- There is nothing that I can do. (No hay nada que yo pueda hacer.)
- Anything that you say will help. (Cualquier cosa que digas ayudará.)
C. Detrás de una oración con interrogativo — evitar who·which
Cuando la oración empieza por los interrogativos who o which, repetir who o which en el relativo suena forzado, así que se usa that para evitar la repetición.
| Oración forzada | Oración natural |
|---|---|
| Who is the man who is calling me? | Who is the man that is calling me? |
| Which is the book which you like? | Which is the book that you like? |
- Who is the woman that just walked in?
- Which is the option that you prefer? (¿Cuál es la opción que prefieres?)
- Who was the friend that called you last night?
- Which is the answer that is correct? (¿Cuál es la respuesta que es correcta?)
Ideas clave
- 1Aprende el uso habitual según el cual, si el antecedente es un nombre fuertemente delimitado por un superlativo, un ordinal, the only, the same o the very, that resulta más natural que who o which. (ejemplo: the best movie that I have seen)
- 2Interioriza que los nombres modificados por all, every, any, no, much, little o most, y los pronombres en -thing (everything, nothing, etc.), también forman pareja con that. (ejemplo: nothing that I can do)
- 3Recuerda la regla de que, si el antecedente reúne a una persona y una cosa, tanto who como which suenan forzados, así que se usa that, que abarca ambos. (ejemplo: the boy and the dog that are running)
- 4Aprende el uso habitual según el cual, cuando la oración empieza por los interrogativos who o which, no se repite who ni which en la oración de relativo, sino que se evita la repetición con that. (ejemplo: Who is the man that is calling?)
