Das Relativpronomen that lässt sich meist mit who und which austauschen, aber bei gemischten Bezugswörtern aus Person und Sache, nach Superlativ, Ordnungszahl, the only, all und every sowie nach den Fragewörtern who und…

Erklärung

Das Relativpronomen that lässt sich meist mit who und which austauschen, aber bei gemischten Bezugswörtern aus Person und Sache, nach Superlativ, Ordnungszahl, the only, all und every sowie nach den Fragewörtern who und which steht bevorzugt that.

A.  Bezugswörter: Person + Sache, Superlativ, the only

Wenn das Bezugswort Person und Sache zugleich umfasst oder durch Superlativ, Ordnungszahl, the only, the same oder the very stark eingegrenzt wird, klingt that natürlicher als who/which. Superlativ · the only · all + that sind die typischen Muster.

Art des BezugswortsBeispielsatz
Person + Sachethe boy and the dog that are running
Superlativthe best book that I have read
Ordnungszahlthe first student that answered
the only / the verythe only person that knows / the very thing that I need
the samethe same problem that we had last year
  • This is the tallest building that I have ever seen.
  • She is the only student that passed the exam.
  • It was the very moment that changed my life.
  • We had the same lunch that they served yesterday.

B.  Nomen mit all·every·any·no und Pronomen auf -thing

Auch wenn das Bezugswort ein Nomen ist, das von einem verallgemeinernden oder verneinenden Wort wie all, every, any, no, much, little oder most begleitet wird, und ebenso bei Pronomen auf -thing wie everything, something, nothing oder anything, klingt that natürlicher.

BezugswortBeispielsatz
all + Nomenall the money that we saved
every + Nomenevery student that attended
no + Nomenno one that I know
Pronomen auf -thingeverything that happened
  • All the food that was left is in the fridge. (Alle übrigen Speisen sind im Kühlschrank.)
  • Every person that I spoke to agreed.
  • There is nothing that I can do. (Es gibt nichts, was ich tun kann.)
  • Anything that you say will help. (Alles, was du sagst, wird helfen.)

C.  Nach einem Satz mit Fragewort — who·which vermeiden

Beginnt der Satz mit dem Fragewort who oder which, wirkt es unschön, im Relativsatz noch einmal who oder which zu verwenden; mit that vermeidet man die Wiederholung.

Unschöner SatzNatürlicher Satz
Who is the man who is calling me?Who is the man that is calling me?
Which is the book which you like?Which is the book that you like?
  • Who is the woman that just walked in?
  • Which is the option that you prefer? (Welche ist die Möglichkeit, die du bevorzugst?)
  • Who was the friend that called you last night?
  • Which is the answer that is correct? (Welche ist die Antwort, die richtig ist?)

Kernpunkte

  1. 1Mach dir die Gewohnheit zu eigen, dass bei einem Bezugswort, das durch Superlativ, Ordnungszahl, the only, the same oder the very stark eingegrenzt ist, that natürlicher klingt als who/which. (Beispiel: the best movie that I have seen)
  2. 2Entwickle das Gefühl, dass auch Nomen mit all·every·any·no·much·little·most und Pronomen auf -thing (everything·nothing usw.) mit that ein Paar bilden. (Beispiel: nothing that I can do)
  3. 3Merke dir die Regel, dass bei einem Bezugswort, das Person und Sache zugleich enthält, weder who noch which passt und deshalb das beide umfassende that verwendet wird. (Beispiel: the boy and the dog that are running)
  4. 4Mach dir die Gewohnheit zu eigen, dass man bei einem Satz, der mit dem Fragewort who oder which beginnt, im Relativsatz nicht erneut who/which setzt, sondern mit that die Wiederholung vermeidet. (Beispiel: Who is the man that is calling?)
