強調したり格式ばった表現にするときは in order to / so as to に置き換えられます。
|---|---|---|
| to + 動詞原形 | 〜するために | I study to pass the exam. |
| in order to + 動詞原形 | 〜するために (強調) | I study in order to pass the exam. |
| so as to + 動詞原形 | 〜するために (格式) | Walk slowly so as not to slip. |
| 否定 in order not to | 〜しないために | I ran in order not to be late. |
- She went to Paris to study French.
- I called him to invite him to my party.
- We got up early in order to catch the first train.
- He whispered so as not to wake the baby.
|---|---|---|
| 〜 to become | 成長して〜になる | He grew up to become a doctor. |
| 〜 to find | 〜して…と分かる | She woke up to find it snowing. |
| 〜 only to | 〜したが結局… | I ran, only to miss the bus. |
| 〜 never to | 二度と〜しない | He left, never to return. |
- She grew up to become a famous writer.
- He lived to see his grandchildren.
- I hurried to the station, only to find the train gone.
- She woke up to find everyone gone.
happy·glad·sad·sorry·surprised·lucky のような感情形容詞の後ろの to不定詞はその感情の原因を表し、must be / can't be の後ろに付くと「〜するとは…
だ (原因) | I'm glad to hear that. |
| must be + 形容詞 + to | 〜するとは…に違いない | She must be tired to sleep so long. |
| kind·clever·foolish of 〜 + to | 〜するとは…だね | It's kind of you to help me. |
- We were surprised to see him at the party.
- I'm sorry to hear the bad news.
- She's lucky to have such good friends.
- He must be crazy to drive in this weather.
(例: I called him to invite him.)
- 2目的の否定形は not to ではなく、in order not to / so as not to で表すのが自然だという点を覚えておいてください。(例: I ran in order not to be late.)
- 3grow up to·live to·wake up to (例: He grew up to become a doctor.)
(例: I'm sorry to hear that.)
- 5must be / can't be + 形容詞 + to不定詞は「〜するとは… (例: He must be tired to sleep so long.)
