Il pronome relativo oggetto (whom / which / that) svolge dentro la proposizione relativa la funzione di oggetto del verbo o della preposizione, e si dispone nell'ordine 'antecedente + pronome relativo + soggetto + verbo'. Con un antecedente di persona si usa whom (formale) / who (parlato) / that, con un antecedente di cosa si usa which / that.

 

A.  Forma — oggetto whom / which / that 

Come pronome relativo oggetto, se l'antecedente è una persona si usa whom (formale) oppure who / that (parlato), se è una cosa si usa which oppure that. Per non confonderlo con il who soggetto, conviene imparare come blocco unico la serie oggetto: whom / which / that.

B.  Ordine — antecedente + relativo + soggetto + verbo 

Dentro la proposizione introdotta dal pronome relativo oggetto ci deve essere sempre un nuovo soggetto, e l'ordine diventa 'antecedente + pronome relativo oggetto + soggetto + verbo'. Memorizza in blocco la formula antecedente + relativo oggetto + soggetto + verbo; è importante anche non rimettere un oggetto dopo il verbo della proposizione relativa.

C.  Parlato — who al posto di whom 

whom è la forma corretta dell'oggetto di persona, ma nell'inglese parlato di oggi è molto più naturale usare who al suo posto. Nello scritto formale e nell'inglese degli esami si tende a usare whom, nella conversazione quotidiana e nelle email who oppure that, e il significato è del tutto identico.
