原級比較 (as ~ as)
原級比較は as + 形容詞/副詞の原級 + as の形で、2つの対象の性質・程度が同じであることを表す表現で、形容詞・副詞をそのままの形(原級)で2つの as の間に入れるのが比較級との大きな違いです。

A. as + 原級 + as — 同等の表現
2つの対象の性質・程度が同じであることを言うときは、形容詞・副詞の原級をそのまま2つの as の間に挟みます。公式は as + 原級 + as で、後ろの as の後に比較する対象が続きます。

- Today is as cold as yesterday. (今日は昨日と同じくらい寒いです。)
- My brother is as busy as I am. (弟は私と同じくらい忙しいです。)
B. not as/so 〜 as — 否定の比較
2つの対象が同じでないときは not as + 原級 + as または not so + 原級 + as の形を使い、前の対象が後の対象より程度が低いという意味になります。会話では not as 〜 as がはるかによく使われ、not so 〜 as はやや格式ばった表現です。

- My new laptop is not so fast as the old one. (新しいノートパソコンは前のものほど速くありません。)
C. 倍数表現 — twice / three times as 〜 as
原級比較の前に twice(2倍)、three times(3倍)、half(半分)のような表現をつけると程度の倍数を表せ、この構造は必ず as 〜 as とセットで使い、比較級 + than では使いません。

- The new office is twice as far as the old one. (新しいオフィスは前の場所の2倍遠いです。)
重要ポイント
- 1原級比較では形容詞・副詞の形を絶対に変えず、元の形のまま2つの as の間に入れるという点が比較級とは違います。(例: as tall as — as taller as は誤り)
- 2as 〜 as の後ろの比較対象に代名詞を使うときは、主格(I, he, she)が正式ですが、会話では目的格(me, him, her)も自然に使われます。(例: as tall as I am / as tall as me)
- 3否定形の not as 〜 as は「〜ほど…でない」という意味になり、比較級 + than に置き換えられる対応関係があります。(例: not as tall as → shorter than)
- 4倍数表現(twice, three times, half)は必ず as 〜 as の前につけて使い、比較級 + than では使えません。(例: twice as big as — twice bigger than は誤り)
- 5日本語の「〜と同じくらい」が as 〜 as にぴったり対応します。(例: Tom is as tall as his father.)
