to不定詞 — 主要構文
to不定詞は too to, so as to, in order to / so as to のように 決まった語順で結合して特定の意味を作る慣用構文が多く、それぞれを so that 節に書き換えられます。意味と語順をまとめて覚えておけば、会話・作文ですぐに使えます。

A. too ~ to — あまりに〜すぎて…できない
too + 形容詞/副詞 + to不定詞は「あまりに〜すぎて…できない」という否定のニュアンスを作る代表的な構文です。too + 形容詞/副詞 + to不定詞 = あまりに〜すぎて…できない という公式と意味を一緒に覚えておきましょう。同じ意味を so + 形容詞 + that + 主語 + can't に書き換えられます。

B. so ~ as to — 〜するほど…だ
so + 形容詞/副詞 + as to不定詞は「〜するほど…だ」という意味で、程度・結果を強調するやや格式のある表現です。会話では be so kind as to、be so good as to の形で丁寧な依頼を作るときにもよく使われます。

C. in order to / so as to — 〜するために
in order to + 動詞の原形と so as to + 動詞の原形は、to不定詞の「目的」の意味をさらに明確に強調する構文で、単なる to よりも格式があり意味がはっきりします。否定の目的は in order not to / so as not to のように not が to の前につきます。

重要ポイント
- 1too + 形容詞/副詞 + to不定詞は「あまりに〜すぎて…できない」という否定のニュアンスを含み、so + 形容詞 + that + 主語 + can't に書き換えられるという等価関係を覚えておきましょう。(例: too hot to drink = so hot that I can't drink it.)
- 2too ~ to 構文に意味上の主語が必要な場合は、too + 形容詞 + for + 目的格 + to V の語順で入れるというルールを覚えておきましょう。(例: This is too heavy for me to lift.)
- 3so ~ as to 構文は会話よりも格式のある文語で使われることが多く、be so kind as to / be so good as to は丁寧な依頼表現としてもよく使われるという実戦感覚を身につけましょう。
- 4in order to / so as to は単なる to よりも目的の意味をはるかに明確にし、否定の目的は not を to の前に入れて in order not to / so as not to の形にするという語順を覚えておきましょう。
- 5日本語の「あまりに〜すぎて…できない・〜するほど〜だ・〜するために」がそれぞれ too ~ to / so ~ as to / in order to 構文に正確に対応するというマッピングを覚えておくと、すぐに選んで使えます。
