Spiegazione

L'infinito con to ha molte costruzioni idiomatiche che si combinano in un ordine fisso per creare un significato preciso, come too ~ to, so ~ as to e in order to / so as to, e ognuna si può riformulare con una proposizione so ~ that. Imparando insieme senso e ordine delle parole, potrai usarle subito nel parlato e nello scritto.

A.  too ~ to — troppo ~ per poter …

too + aggettivo/avverbio + infinito con to è la costruzione tipica che crea la sfumatura negativa di «troppo ~ per poter …». too + aggettivo/avverbio + to V = troppo ~ per poter … Memorizza insieme la formula e il significato. Lo stesso senso si può rendere con so + aggettivo + that + soggetto + can't.

Costruzione too ~ toAlternativa so ~ that ... can't
He is too tired to work.He is so tired that he can't work.
The soup is too hot to eat.The soup is so hot that I can't eat it.
She spoke too fast to understand. She spoke so fast that I couldn't understand.
  • I was too tired to finish the report. (Ero troppo stanco per finire la relazione.)
  • The bag is too heavy for me to carry. (La borsa è troppo pesante perché io la porti.)
  • He spoke too quietly to hear. (Parlava troppo piano perché lo si sentisse.)
  • The exam was too difficult to pass. (L'esame era troppo difficile da superare.)

B.  so ~ as to — tanto … da ~

so + aggettivo/avverbio + as to + infinito significa «tanto … da ~» ed è un'espressione piuttosto formale che sottolinea grado e conseguenza. Nel parlato si usa spesso anche nelle forme be so kind as to e be so good as to per formulare richieste cortesi.

Esempio con so ~ as toSignificato
He is so kind as to help others.È tanto gentile da aiutare gli altri.
She is so wise as to understand.È tanto saggia da capire.
Would you be so kind as to close the door?Sarebbe così gentile da chiudere la porta?
  • She was so generous as to lend me her car. (È stata tanto generosa da prestarmi la macchina.)
  • He was so foolish as to believe that story. (È stato tanto sciocco da credere a quella storia.)
  • Would you be so good as to wait a moment? (Sarebbe così gentile da aspettare un momento?)

C.  in order to / so as to — allo scopo di

in order to + forma base e so as to + forma base sono costruzioni che marcano in modo più netto il valore di «scopo» dell'infinito con to, e rispetto al semplice to sono più formali e più chiare. Nello scopo negativo il not si mette davanti a to, come in in order not to / so as not to.

CostruzioneSignificatoEsempio
in order to VAllo scopo diI woke up early in order to study.
so as to VAllo scopo diHe left early so as to avoid traffic.
in order not to VPer nonI whispered in order not to wake the baby.
so as not to VPer nonShe spoke slowly so as not to confuse us.
  • She works hard in order to support her family. (Lavora sodo per mantenere la famiglia.)
  • He left early so as to catch the first train. (È partito presto per prendere il primo treno.)

Punti chiave

  1. 1too + aggettivo/avverbio + infinito con to porta la sfumatura negativa di «troppo ~ per poter …» e si può riformulare con so + aggettivo + that + soggetto + can't: ricorda questa equivalenza. (es.: too hot to drink = so hot that I can't drink it.)
  2. 2Se la costruzione too ~ to richiede un soggetto logico, lo si inserisce nell'ordine too + aggettivo + for + complemento + to V: impara bene questa regola. (es.: This is too heavy for me to lift.)
  3. 3La costruzione so ~ as to appartiene più allo scritto formale che al parlato, e be so kind as to / be so good as to servono anche come formule di richiesta cortese: acquisisci questa sensibilità pratica.
  4. 4in order to / so as to rendono il valore di scopo molto più esplicito del semplice to, e nello scopo negativo il not va davanti a to, dando in order not to / so as not to: impara bene quest'ordine.
  5. 5In italiano «troppo ~ per poter …», «tanto … da ~» e «allo scopo di» corrispondono esattamente alle costruzioni too ~ to / so ~ as to / in order to: memorizzata questa corrispondenza, potrai scegliere subito quella giusta.
