La forma passiva di una frase con verbo modale è modale + be + participio passato: il modale resta com'è e si cambia soltanto il verbo principale in be + participio passato.

La forma passiva di una frase con verbo modale è modale + be + participio passato: il modale resta com'è e si cambia soltanto il verbo principale in be + participio passato. La regola non cambia con nessun modale: can, must, should, will, may e gli altri si comportano tutti allo stesso modo.

 

A.  Modale + be + p.p. — la forma di base 

Per volgere al passivo una frase con un verbo modale si inserisce be fra il modale e il verbo principale, e il verbo principale diventa participio passato. Dopo il modale, be resta alla forma base. La formula è modale + be + p.p..

B.  Modale perfetto — modale + have been + p.p. 

La forma passiva delle frasi con modale perfetto, che esprimono supposizione, rammarico o critica su fatti passati, è modale + have + been + participio passato. Conviene imparare should have been, must have been e could have been come blocchi unici.

  • The keys might have been left in the car. (Le chiavi potrebbero essere state lasciate in macchina.)

 

C.  Modali passivi — regole, avvisi, cortesia 

In contesti pubblici o cortesi — regole, avvisi, richieste garbate, consigli — il passivo con modale si è fissato come espressione idiomatica. È particolarmente frequente in comunicati, manuali e documenti di lavoro.
