I relativi - distinguere interrogativi e relativi

who·which·what·when·where·why·how hanno la stessa forma, ma senza un antecedente davanti (il sostantivo modificato) sono interrogativi, con l'antecedente sono relativi.

Spiegazione

A.  Interrogativi — prop. sostantiva indiretta

InterrogativoSensoEsempio (prop. sostantiva)
whochi — soggetto·oggettoI know who she is.
whichqualeTell me which is yours.
whatche cosaI don't know what he wants.
whenquandoTell me when it starts.
wheredoveI forgot where I put it.
whyperchéI wonder why she left.
howcomeI know how it works.
  • I don't know what she wants. (Non so che cosa voglia.)
  • Please tell me when the store opens. (Dimmi per favore quando apre il negozio.)
  • I wonder why he was late. (Mi chiedo perché sia arrivato tardi.)
  • Do you remember how we solved it? (Ti ricordi come l'abbiamo risolto?)

Pronome relativoAntecedenteEsempio (prop. aggettiva)
whopersonathe man who is my teacher
whichcosathe book which I read
thatpersona·cosathe person that helped me
  • I know the man who lives next door. (Conosco l'uomo che abita qui accanto.)
  • This is the book which I bought yesterday.
  • She's the doctor that saved my life.
  • I met the woman who wrote this novel.

C.  Avverbi rel. — tempo·luogo·causa·modo

Avverbio relativoAntecedenteEsempio (prop. aggettiva)
whentempo (the day, the time)the day when we met
whereluogo (the place, the house)the place where I was born
whycausa (the reason)the reason why she left
howmodo (the way — non insieme)how she solved it
  • I remember the day when we first met.
  • This is the house where I grew up. (Questa è la casa dove sono cresciuto.)
  • Tell me the reason why you were late.
  • I know how she solved the problem. (So come ha risolto il problema.)

Punti chiave

(es. I know where she lives. — interrogativo / This is the town where she lives. — relativo)
  3. 3Impara l'uso corrente per cui l'avverbio relativo how non si usa insieme all'antecedente the way: si scrive o the way o how, uno solo dei due. (es. how she did it / the way she did it)
(X: I don't know who is he.)
