関係詞 — 関係副詞
関係副詞 when·where·why·how は、時・場所・理由・方法の先行詞のあとについて形容詞節を導き、「前置詞 + 関係代名詞」を1つの副詞で代わりに表します。関係副詞節は完全な節なので、後ろに欠けた名詞の場所がありません。

A. 関係副詞の概念 — 先行詞 + 関係副詞 = 形容詞節
関係副詞は先行詞(時・場所・理由・方法)を修飾する形容詞節を導き、節の中で副詞の役割をするので、後ろの節に欠けた名詞の場所がありません。これは関係代名詞が節の中で主語・目的語(名詞)の場所を代わりに埋めるのと対照的です。

B. 4つの関係副詞 — when·where·why·how
when は時、where は場所、why は理由、how は方法の先行詞のあとにそれぞれついて形容詞節を作ります。how は the way と一緒に使わず、どちらか一方だけを使います。

C. 関係副詞 = 前置詞 + 関係代名詞
関係副詞は「前置詞 + 関係代名詞(which)」の組み合わせで置き換えることができ、文語体・格式体ではこの組み合わせがよく使われます。when = on which / where = in which の対応を覚えておくと読解が楽になります。
