동명사는 특정 표현들과 결합해 관용구를 이루는데, be busy -ing, can't help -ing, feel like -ing, it's no use -ing, look forward to -ing, be worth -ing 등이 대표입니다.
A. 회화 필수 관용 — be busy·can't help·feel like
be busy -ing는 '~하느라 바쁘다', can't help -ing는 '~하지 않을 수 없다', feel like -ing는 '~하고 싶다'는 뜻으로 회화에서 매우 자주 등장합니다.
|---|---|---|
| be busy -ing | ~하느라 바쁘다 | She is busy working on her report. |
| can't help -ing | ~하지 않을 수 없다 | I can't help worrying about him. |
| feel like -ing | ~하고 싶다 | I feel like taking a walk. |
- He was busy cooking dinner when I called.
- She couldn't help crying at the movie.
- Do you feel like going out tonight?
B. 부정·소용없음 — it's no use·it's no good·there's no point in
it's no use -ing / it's no good -ing는 '~해도 소용없다'는 뜻으로 뒤에 반드시 동명사가 옵니다.
|---|---|---|
| it's no use -ing | ~해도 소용없다 | It's no use arguing with him. |
| it's no good -ing | ~해도 소용없다 | It's no good asking her. |
| there's no point in -ing | ~할 이유가 없다 | There's no point in waiting longer. |

- It's no good pretending you don't know.
- There's no point in calling him again.
- It was no use trying to change his mind.
C. to가 전치사인 관용 — look forward to·be worth·on -ing 등
look forward to의 to는 to 부정사의 to가 아니라 전치사이므로 반드시 뒤에 동명사(-ing)를 씁니다. look forward to + -ing (to = 전치사) 를 통째로 익혀 두세요.
|---|---|---|
| look forward to -ing | ~하기를 고대하다 | I look forward to hearing from you. |
| be worth -ing | ~할 가치가 있다 | This book is worth reading. |
