B. उत्तरावस्था than — दिशा पलटने का ढंग
not as ~ as वाले वाक्य में कर्ता और तुलना की चीज़ की जगहें बदलकर उत्तरावस्था + than से दोबारा लिख दें तो अर्थ वही रहता है. not as ~ as = उत्तरावस्था than (उलट) = less than (वही) — इन तीनों की बराबरी ही इस इकाई की जान है.

C. less than — कमी बताने वाला ढंग
less + मूलावस्था + than कर्ता और तुलना की चीज़ की जगहें वैसी की वैसी रखकर वही अर्थ कह देने वाला कमी बताने का ढंग है, और इसमें आगे सिर्फ़ less जोड़ना होता है, इसलिए वाक्य की बनावट बिलकुल नहीं बदलती — यही इसकी सुविधा है.
