比較 — the 比較級, the 比較級
the + 比較級 , the + 比較級 … は「〜すればするほどより…だ」という意味で、前の節の程度変化が後ろの節の程度変化を引き起こす相関比較構文です。各節の比較級は必ず文の先頭に持ってこなければならず、両方の節の前に the がつきます。

A. 基本形 — The + 比較級 ~, the + 比較級 …
2つの節の比較級をそれぞれ the とともに文頭に持ってきて、コンマ(,)で2つの節をつなぐのがこの構文の基本形です。前の節は条件、後ろの節は結果のように働きます。The + 比較級, the + 比較級 = 〜すればするほどより… がこのユニットの核心公式です。

B. 語順 — 比較級を文頭に引き出す
元の文で後ろにあった比較級部分を必ず各節の先頭に引き出さなければこの構文は成り立ちません。この語順移動を守らないと、文がまったく違う意味になったり不自然になったりします。

C. よく使う慣用表現 — 短い形と定着した表現
会話では主語と動詞を省略して the + 比較級2つだけで非常に短く使うこともあり、the sooner, the better のような慣用句はまるごと定着しています。意味は同じですが、はるかに力強くリズム感があるように聞こえるのが特徴です。

重要ポイント
- 1この構文では2つの節の比較級を必ず各節の先頭に引き出し、両方の節の前に the をつけます。(例: The more you practice, the better you get.)
- 2長い形容詞の比較級は the more + 原級の形で前に引き出し、原級も一緒に移動します。(例: The more difficult the exam, the harder we study.)
- 32つの節はコンマ(,)でつなぎ、等位接続詞 and や従属接続詞 as·when を入れません。(例: The older I get, the wiser I become. / X: The older I get and the wiser I become.)
- 4会話では the sooner, the better / the more, the merrier のように主語・動詞を省略した短い慣用表現がよく使われます。(例: The sooner, the better.)
- 5日本語の「〜すればするほどより…になる」は英語では the + 比較級, the + 比較級 でそのまま置き換えられます。(例: 学べば学ぶほど面白い → The more you learn, the more interesting it becomes.)
