Il confronto - the comparativo, the comparativo

the + comparativo , the + comparativo ... significa «quanto più , tanto più ...» ed è la struttura comparativa correlativa in cui la variazione di grado della prima proposizione trascina quella della seconda.

Spiegazione

A.  Forma base — The + comp. ~, the + comp. ...

ProposizioneFormaEsempio
prima (condizione)The + comparativo + soggetto + verboThe more you eat,
seconda (risultato)the + comparativo + soggetto + verbothe fatter you get.
  • The colder it becomes, the more I want to stay home. (Quanto più fa freddo, tanto più voglio restare a casa.)
  • The more I study, the more I understand. (Quanto più studio, tanto più capisco.)
  • The higher you climb, the colder it gets.

Frase originariaConversione in The comp., the comp.
You get better as you practice more. The more you practice, the better you get.
I get wiser as I get older. The older I get, the wiser I become.
You earn more if you work harder. The harder you work, the more you earn.
The tea tastes better when it's hotter. The hotter the tea, the better it tastes.
  • The longer you wait, the harder it becomes. (Quanto più aspetti, tanto più diventa difficile.)

  • The faster you drive, the more dangerous it is. (Quanto più veloce guidi, tanto più è pericoloso.)
  • The less you worry, the better you sleep. (Quanto meno ti preoccupi, tanto meglio dormi.)

C.  Espressioni ricorrenti — forme brevi e fisse

Espressione fissaSignificato
The sooner, the better.Prima è, meglio è.
The more, the merrier.Più siamo, meglio stiamo.
The bigger, the better.Più è grande, meglio è.
The less, the better.Meno è, meglio è.

Punti chiave

(es.: The more you practice, the better you get.)
  2. 2Il comparativo degli aggettivi lunghi si porta in testa nella forma the more + grado positivo, spostando in avanti anche il grado positivo. (es.: The more difficult the exam, the harder we study.)
  3. 3Le due proposizioni vanno unite con una virgola (,) e non ammettono né la congiunzione coordinante and né le subordinanti as o when. (es.: The older I get, the wiser I become. / X: The older I get and the wiser I become.)
  4. 4Nel parlato ricorrono spesso formule brevi senza soggetto né verbo, come the sooner, the better o the more, the merrier. (es.: The sooner, the better.)
  5. 5L'italiano ha una struttura parallela, quanto più ~, tanto più ..., quindi puoi ricalcarla direttamente con the + comparativo, the + comparativo. (es.: quanto più impari, tanto più ti diverti → The more you learn, the more interesting it becomes.)
