関係詞 — 関係副詞の省略
先行詞が the time·the day·the place·the reason のように一般的なとき、関係副詞 when·where·why はよく省略され、方法は the way と how のどちらか一方だけを使います。会話ではむしろ省略形が標準的です。

A. 一般的な先行詞のあとの関係副詞省略
先行詞が the time·the day·the place·the reason のような一般的な名詞のとき、関係副詞 when·where·why はよく省略され、意味はそのまま維持されます。

B. the way と how — 必ずどちらか一方だけ
方法を表すときは the way または how のどちらか一方だけを使い、両方を一緒に使ったり the way in which に伸ばしたりすると会話では不自然になります。the way ~ / how ~ (どちらか一方だけ) というルールをまるごと覚えておきましょう。

C. 実践トーン — 会話の省略形 vs 格式体
関係副詞の省略形は会話ではるかに短く自然なので日常会話では基本で、格式のある文では関係副詞を残して書くこともあります。

重要ポイント
- 1先行詞が the time·the day·the place·the reason のように一般的なとき、後ろの関係副詞 when·where·why はよく省略され、会話ではむしろ省略形が自然だという慣用を身につけましょう。(例: the day (when) we met)
- 2方法を表すときは the way と how のどちらか一方だけを使わなければならず、the way how や the way in which に伸ばすと不自然になるというルールを守ってください。(例: I love the way / how you smile)
- 3日本語の「〜した日・〜した場所・〜した理由」は英語では the day·the place·the reason のあとに関係副詞なしで節だけをつけても自然に表現される感覚を身につけましょう。
- 4格式のある文では関係副詞(when·where·why)を残して書くこともありますが、日常会話では省略形が標準的だというトーン感覚をつかんでおきましょう。
- 5関係副詞が省略された節は形の上では関係代名詞が目的語として省略された節と似て見えますが、副詞が抜けたので後ろの節は依然として完全だという構造の違いを理解しておきましょう。
