I relativi - l'omissione dell'avverbio relativo

Quando l'antecedente è generico come the time·the day·the place·the reason, gli avverbi relativi when·where·why vengono spesso omessi, e per il modo si usa solo the way oppure how.

Spiegazione

Quando l'antecedente è generico come the time·the day·the place·the reason, gli avverbi relativi when·where·why vengono spesso omessi, e per il modo si usa solo the way oppure how.

Quando l'antecedente è un sostantivo generico come the time·the day·the place·the reason, gli avverbi relativi when·where·why si omettono comunemente e il senso resta identico.

  • Do you remember the day I met her?
  • This is the place I grew up. (Questo è il posto dove sono cresciuto.)
  • Tell me the reason you called me.
  • I forgot the time the movie starts.

B.  the way e how — sempre uno solo dei due

Per indicare il modo si usa the way oppure how, uno solo dei due: metterli insieme o allungare in the way in which suona innaturale nel parlato. Impara in blocco questa regola: the way ~ / how ~ (uno solo dei due).

  • Show me how you solved this problem. (Mostrami come hai risolto questo problema.)

C.  Tono reale — parlato senza avverbio vs formale

Punti chiave

  1. 1Quando l'antecedente è generico come the time·the day·the place·the reason, l'avverbio relativo when·where·why che segue si omette comunemente, e nel parlato la forma senza avverbio è anzi la più naturale: fai tuo questo uso corrente. (es. the day (when) we met)
  2. 2Per indicare il modo bisogna usare o the way o how, e allungare in the way how oppure the way in which suona innaturale: rispetta questa regola. (es. I love the way / how you smile)
