|---|---|
| the house in which I live | in which |
| the person to whom I wrote | to whom |
| the company for which she works | for which |
| the tools with which he works | with which |
| the topic about which we talked | about which |
- The professor to whom I addressed the letter replied quickly.
- The chair on which she was sitting broke.
- The company for which he works is well known.
- The topic about which they argued is complex.
|---|---|
| the house in which I live | the house I live in |
| the person to whom I spoke | the person I spoke to |
| the company for which she works | the company she works for |
| the tools with which he works | the tools he works with |
- The man I was talking to is my colleague.
- The chair she was sitting on broke.
- The bed I sleep in is very comfortable.
- The topic they argued about is complex.
| Form | Ton | Gebrauch |
|---|---|---|
| Präposition + whom / which (in which, to whom) | förmlich · schriftsprachlich | Aufsatz · Vertrag · förmliche E-Mail |
| Präposition am Satzende (~ I live in, ~ I spoke to) | natürlich · Gespräch | Alltag · E-Mail · Zeitungstext |
| Präposition + that (in that, to that) | nicht möglich (X) | — |
- The office in which she works. (das Büro, in dem sie arbeitet)
- The office she works in. (das Büro, in dem sie arbeitet)
- The friend with whom I traveled. (der Freund, mit dem ich gereist bin)
- The friend I traveled with. (der Freund, mit dem ich gereist bin)
Kernpunkte
(z. B. in which I live / which I live in)
- 2Im schriftsprachlichen 'Präposition + whom / which' steht zwingend whom oder which, that steht dort niemals — halte diese Regel ein. (z. B. The house in which I live. — in that ist nicht möglich)
- 3In der Variante des Gesprächs (Präposition am Ende) steht das Relativpronomen frei als whom / who / which / that — oder es entfällt — nutze diese Beweglichkeit. (z. B. the man (whom / who / that / —) I spoke to)
- 5Mit Ergänzungen wie all of / some of / most of / one of erweitert sich die Fügung zu all of which, one of whom — kenne auch diese Anwendung. (z. B. I have three brothers, all of whom are doctors.)
