La forma passiva - la struttura It ~ that

Per volgere al passivo i verbi che reggono una proposizione con that come oggetto — say·think·believe·know·report — ci sono due strade.

Spiegazione

Per volgere al passivo i verbi che reggono una proposizione con that come oggetto — say·think·believe·know·report — ci sono due strade. Una è la struttura «It is + participio passato + that ~», che parte dal soggetto apparente It; l'altra è la struttura «S + be + participio passato + infinito con to», che porta in testa alla frase il soggetto della proposizione con that.

A.  It is + p.p. + that ~ — soggetto apparente It

Mettere l'intera proposizione con that al posto di soggetto la rende pesante: per questo si antepone il soggetto apparente It e la proposizione con that va in fondo. Il tempo interno alla proposizione con that resta invariato.

B.  S + be + p.p. + to ~ — il soggetto in testa

Portando in testa alla frase il soggetto della proposizione con that e agganciandogli be + participio passato + infinito con to ottieni lo stesso significato. Se il tempo della proposizione con that è quello della principale si usa to + forma base, se è anteriore to have + p.p. La formula è It is said that S ~ = S is said to ~.

Punti chiave

  1. 1I verbi che reggono come oggetto una proposizione con that — say·think·believe·know·report·expect·consider — hanno due passivi possibili: la struttura It ~ that e la struttura S is ~ to. (esempio: It is said that he is rich. = He is said to be rich.)
  2. 2Nella struttura It ~ that il tempo interno alla proposizione con that resta quello della frase attiva di partenza. (esempio: They say he is honest. → It is said that he is honest.)
  3. 3Nella struttura S is ~ to, se il tempo della proposizione con that è quello della principale si usa to + forma base, se è anteriore to have + p.p.. (esempio: It is said that he was rich. → He is said to have been rich.)
  4. 4Queste due strutture passive ricorrono spesso negli articoli di cronaca, nella lingua formale e nelle presentazioni per riferire un fatto senza scoprirne la fonte. (esempio: The company is expected to announce the results soon.)
  5. 5It is thought / believed / considered presentano il contenuto della proposizione con that come opinione condivisa più che come giudizio personale.
