Spiegazione
A. Con l'interrogativo — interrogativo + S + V
Nelle domande che contengono un interrogativo come who, what, where, when, why, how si prende quell'interrogativo come congiunzione e si cambia l'ordine successivo in «soggetto + verbo». con interrogativo → interrogativo + S + V. Il do/does/did del discorso diretto sparisce e sul verbo resta soltanto il tempo.
| Discorso diretto | Discorso indiretto |
|---|---|
| "Where do you live?" | asked where I lived |
| "What are you doing?" | asked what I was doing |
| "When did she leave?" | asked when she had left |
| "Why are you late?" | asked why I was late |
| "How did you know?" | asked how I had known |
- He asked, "Where is the station?" → He asked where the station was. (Ha chiesto dove fosse la stazione.)
- She asked, "Who called you?" → She asked who had called me. (Ha chiesto chi mi avesse telefonato.)
- Tom asked, "What do you want?" → Tom asked what I wanted. (Tom ha chiesto che cosa volessi.)
- Anna asked, "How are you feeling?" → Anna asked how I was feeling. (Anna ha chiesto come mi sentissi.)
B. Senza interrogativo — if / whether + S + V

(esempio: "Where do you live?" → He asked where I lived.)
(esempio: He asked if / whether I was ready.)
- 3Il do/does/did del discorso diretto sparisce nel discorso indiretto e sul verbo principale resta soltanto il tempo. (X: She asked if I do like it → O: She asked if I liked it.)
- 4Come verbo introduttivo suonano naturali asked, wondered, inquired, e dopo ask si può mettere un complemento oggetto (me, him). (esempio: He asked me if I was okay.)
- 5Nell'interrogativa indiretta inglese si tiene sempre l'ordine dichiarativo (soggetto + verbo). (X: He asked where did I live → O: He asked where I lived.)
