A. Com palavra interrogativa — interrogativa + S + V
A frase interrogativa que traz uma palavra interrogativa como who, what, where, when, why ou how toma essa palavra como conjunção e passa a ordem seguinte para 'sujeito + verbo'. com interrogativa → interrogativa + S + V. O do/does/did do discurso direto desaparece e só o tempo verbal fica marcado no verbo.
| Discurso direto | Discurso indireto |
|---|---|
| "Where do you live?" | asked where I lived |
| "What are you doing?" | asked what I was doing |
| "When did she leave?" | asked when she had left |
| "Why are you late?" | asked why I was late |
| "How did you know?" | asked how I had known |
- He asked, "Where is the station?" → He asked where the station was. (Ele perguntou onde ficava a estação.)
- She asked, "Who called you?" → She asked who had called me. (Ela perguntou quem tinha me ligado.)
- Tom asked, "What do you want?" → Tom asked what I wanted. (Tom perguntou o que eu queria.)
- Anna asked, "How are you feeling?" → Anna asked how I was feeling. (Anna perguntou como eu estava me sentindo.)
B. Sem palavra interrogativa — if / whether + S + V
A frase interrogativa que se responde com Yes/No não tem palavra interrogativa, então entra a conjunção if ou whether e a ordem seguinte passa para 'sujeito + verbo'. sem interrogativa → if / whether + S + V. if e whether são quase sempre intercambiáveis, e whether soa mais natural no registro formal e na enumeração de alternativas.

|---|---|
| "Are you tired?" | asked if I was tired |
| "Do you speak English?" | asked whether I spoke English |
| "Did she come?" | asked if she had come |
| "Can you swim?" | asked whether I could swim |
| "Have you eaten?" | asked if I had eaten |
- He asked, "Are you a student?" → He asked if I was a student. (Ele perguntou se eu era estudante.)

- Anna asked, "Will you come tomorrow?" → Anna asked whether I would come the next day.
| Elemento | Discurso direto | Discurso indireto |
|---|---|---|
| tempo verbal | am / is / are | was / were |
| tempo verbal | will | would |
| tempo verbal | can | could |
| pessoa | you (o interlocutor) | I / he / she (do ponto de vista de quem relata) |
| tempo | now / today | then / that day |

Pontos principais
(Ex.: "Where do you live?" → He asked where I lived.)
(Ex.: He asked if / whether I was ready.)
- 3O do/does/did do discurso direto desaparece no indireto e só o tempo verbal fica marcado no verbo principal. (X: She asked if I do like it → O: She asked if I liked it.)
- 4Como verbo de elocução, o natural é usar asked, wondered ou inquired, e depois de ask cabe um objeto (me, him). (Ex.: He asked me if I was okay.)
(X: He asked where did I live → O: He asked where I lived.)
