比較 — 比較構文の応用

A. the + 比較級 ~, the + 比較級 — 〜すればするほど…
2つの比較級を the で導いて前後に配置すると、「前の程度が大きくなるほど後の程度も大きくなる」という比例関係を表します。The + 比較級, the + 比較級 という対称構造で、それぞれの the の後ろの比較級の塊が文頭に出ることで語順が少し変わるのが特徴です。

- The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know. (学ぶほど自分がいかに知らないかに気づきます。)

B. 比較級 + and + 比較級 — だんだん〜になる
同じ比較級を and でつないで繰り返すと「だんだん〜になる」という変化・進行の意味になります。more で作る比較級は more and more + 形容詞/副詞 の形で使います。

C. 応用的な慣用表現 — no more ~ than / not so much A as B / know better than to
この3つの表現は、文字通りではなく慣用的なニュアンスを持つ応用的な比較構文です。no more A than B は「B が〜でないように A も〜でない」という強い否定、not so much A as B は「A というより B だ」という再定義、know better than to V は「〜するほど愚かではない」という判断表現です。

重要ポイント
- 1the + 比較級, the + 比較級は前後の2つの比較級を対称に配置して比例関係を表します。(例: The more you practice, the better you get.)
- 2比較級 + and + 比較級は「だんだん〜になる」という進行変化を表し、more 形は more and more + 形容詞で使います。(例: more and more expensive)
- 3no more A than B は強い否定、not so much A as B は再定義(A より B)のニュアンスでそれぞれ使われます。(例: no more a fish than, not so much strict as fair)
