to不定詞 — 独立不定詞
独立不定詞は文中の特定の要素を修飾せず、文全体を包む副詞句として、たいてい文頭に置かれ、コンマで本文と区切られます。慣用表現が多いので、まとめて覚えておくと便利です。

A. 冒頭・評価の慣用表現
会話や文章の冒頭で、自分の態度・率直さ・出発点を示すときによく使われる慣用句があります。独立不定詞 = 文全体を修飾する副詞句 という性格を覚えておきましょう。

B. 状況・感情を表す独立不定詞
驚き・当然・補足を添えるときに使う独立不定詞で、文全体のトーンを大きく変えます。

- To make matters worse, it started to rain. (さらに悪いことに、雨まで降り始めました。)
- She speaks Japanese, not to mention English. (彼女は英語は言うまでもなく日本語も話します。)
C. 文中の位置と句読点
独立不定詞は位置が文頭・文中・文末に分かれ、どこに置かれてもコンマで本文と区切ります。

- To do her justice, she worked very hard. (彼女を公平に評価すると、本当に一生懸命働きました。)
- Not to mention the rain, the wind was terrible. (雨は言うまでもなく、風もひどかったです。)
重要ポイント
- 1独立不定詞は文中の特定の要素ではなく、文全体を包む副詞句です。(例: To be honest, I'm tired.)
- 2ほとんどが慣用表現なので、to tell the truth, to be honest, to begin with, needless to say などをグループでまとめて覚えるアプローチが効率的です。
- 3文頭に置くときは必ずコンマで本文と区切り、文中・文末に挿入されるときは前後のコンマで挟みます。(例: He is, so to speak, a genius.)
- 4so to speak や to make matters worse のようにニュアンスの強い表現は文全体のトーンを決定します。(例: To make matters worse, it started to rain.)
- 5日本語の「実を言うと・正直に・まず・不思議なことに・さらに悪いことに」にそれぞれ対応する独立不定詞が決まっております。(例: 実を言うと → To tell the truth.)
